Composite decking is a combination of wood and plastic. Composite decking never needs painting or staining. It is essentially waterproof and maintenance free. And, since most are made from recycled products, composite decking is actually good for the environment. Composite decks can pay for themselves in just 4 years. And they can recover 90% of their intial cost at the time of re-sale. As a result, the market-share for composite decking is growing rapidly.
Unlike composites, plastic decking does not contain a wood component. As a result it is more resistant to staining and fading than the composites. It too is essentially waterproof and maintenance free. Plastic decking is made with 100% recycled material. As a result, plastic decking is very good for the environment.
PVC decking also does not contain a wood component. It too is resistant to staining and fading. However, because most are made from new, rather than recycled materials, PVC decking may not be as environmentally friendly as the composites or plastic decking.
Which-ever product you choose, keep in mind two important properties when selecting a hidden deck fastening system:
Both composite and plastic decking expand and contract "across the grain" with changes in temperature much more than wood does.
Neither composite, plastic or PVC decking will ever cup or warp - they always lay flat on the joists.
Common fasteners in use today have not been designed with these features in mind.
When composite or plastic decking is installed with screws, the continual expansion and contraction of the deckboards can cause the screws to work their way up above the deck surface. This creates a hazard for anyone walking on the deck, especially with bare feet.. The screws must then be driven back down into the decking. Eventually, they will not hold any longer in the softwood that is used to build the deck sub-structure. This movement of the boards can also cause the boards to split or crack at the ends. Screws allow water to penetrate the surface. Water expands when it freezes. This expansion can crack even composite, plastic or PVC decking. And, if you install your decking with screws, whenever you look down at your deck you will always see....screws.
Hidden fasteners are a better choice. But most hidden fasteners do not allow for the expansion and contraction of composite and plastic decking. Some of them have a tendancy to loosen up over time. The deckboards can actually pull away from the fasteners themselves. Most hidden fasteners are quite expensive and difficult to install. And, most hidden fasteners are still easily visible, not hidden at all.

The Aphano hidden deck fastener securely holds down each individual deck board yet still allows composite and plastic material to expand and contract without stress. And they provide the hold-down power needed for composite, plastic and PVC decking. No other deck fastener has these features. Aphano hidden deck fasteners are made especially for composite, plastic and PVC decking. They are constructed of U.V. resistant, engineered polypropylene. Aphano hidden fasteners are 100% ACQ compatible. They can also be used to install wood decking.
Beautiful
Can you imagine being able to see the sheet rock screws on the
walls of your home? Or the nails that hold down your wood floor?
Why would anyone want to see the screws on their deck? There is
no doubt that hidden fasteners are superior to screws or nails.
It is just a matter of which one to use. Aphano hidden fasteners
are simply the best hidden fastener that money can buy.
Versatile
Aphano fasteners work with almost any composite, plastic or PVC deck material.
The side gap can vary from 0 to 1/2".
Durable
A deck is only as durable as the materials it is made of. Water
penetration is the #1 cause of deck failure. In cold areas the
expansion of water can cause splitting and cracking of the
deckboards. Aphano fasteners will extend the life of the deck
because they do not allow water to penetrate the surface. Unlike
screws or most other hidden fasteners, there is no opening in the
sides or top of the deckboards.
Cost Effective
Aphano hidden fasteners cost less than most other hidden fastener
systems and they don't cost much more than screws. Unlike other
hidden fastener systems, with Aphano fasteners you buy only what
you need. Return any unused fasteners for a full refund. Don't
forget that cost effectiveness is much more than just the initial
price of the materials. The value of your deck will increase
considerably due to the beauty of the installation. And a quality
deck will also increase the equity of your home.
Easy to Install
Aphano hidden fasteners can take less time to install than
screws. There is no need to pre-drill or countersink the holes.
They can be installed more quickly and with far less labor than
other hidden fastening systems. And there is no cutting or
slicing of the deck boards. They can be completely installed by
one person from above the deck. They can also be installed from
below the deck. Either way, you get a beautiful fastener free
surface. They can actually be installed faster than screws.
Secure
With Aphano hidden fasteners each deckboard is firmly secured to
the substructure. Nails have a tendency to "pop up" over time.
Screws hold more securely than other fasteners but they can cause
the boards to crack, especially near the ends. Other hidden
fasteners hold down the board by a thin slice of material.
Imagine what will happen to these fasteners when the boards
expand and contract throughout the year. Aphano fasteners are
securely fastened with screws to the underside of the deckboards.
And because the screws are not near the ends or edges of the
boards splitting and cracking is avoided.
Safe
Tripping over just one exposed screw or nail on a deck should be
enough to make anyone consider a better way. Aphano fasteners are
attached to the underside of the deckboards. With Aphano hidden
fasteners you will never need to worry about exposed nails or
screws on your deck.
Unseen
The disadvantages of screws are obvious to anyone who has ever
looked at a deck built with these old-fashioned fasteners. But
even other so called "hidden fasteners" are not really hidden.
They are easily visible from the top of the deck and will detract
from the clean look you are trying to achieve. Aphano hidden
fasteners are virtually invisible from above the deck. And Aphano
fasteners are designed to blend with the color of ACQ treated
wood so that they are well hidden from below the deck as
well.
Long Lasting
The treated wood used in construction today is very corrosive to
most materials. Aphano fasteners are constructed of U.V.
resistant, high strength polypropylene to insure that they will
last as long as your deck.
